What is a window attachment?
Window attachments are products installed either internally or externally on an existing window.
What is the AERC?
AERC is an independent organization created in 2014 through joint funding by the Window Covering Manufacturers Association (WCMA) and the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE). AERC is developing a credible rating, certification, labeling, and performance verification procedures that will be adopted by the window attachments industry to provide accurate information to consumers about the energy performance of window attachments.
How was AERC formed?
The Attachments Energy Rating Council was created because there was no standardized way of assessing the energy performance of window attachments. The U.S. Department of Energy entered into through four-year $1.6 million cooperative agreement with the Window Covering Manufacturers Association to create a rating, labeling, and certification program for window attachments to address this problem.
Where does AERC’s funding come from?
AERC will have three main sources of funding: DOE’s $1.6 million awards, membership fees, and certification program fees.
Is AERC affiliated with the federal government?
AERC will be funded through a cost share agreement between DOE and the window attachment industry through December 2018, at which point it will become a standalone organization. While AERC is partially funded by DOE, it is not a government entity, but an independent, public-interest certification and labeling organization.
Who can become a member?
Membership is open to organizations working in the window attachments and/or energy efficiency industries. There are three categories of membership: regular, associate, and individual. Regular membership is open to manufacturers of components and finished fenestration attachments products. Associate Membership is open to organizations that are not eligible for Industry Membership. This includes but is not limited to public interest organizations, non-profits, labs, utilities, and distributors/retailers of window attachments. Individual Membership is available to any individual not eligible for either Industry or Associate Membership with experience in building energy efficiency and/or energy ratings.
What is the membership dues schedule?
AERC’s membership year runs from January 1 through December 31. Membership dues are not rolling. See Become a Member for further details.
What are the fees associated with the certification program?
AERC certification program fees are outlined in this document.
Why are manufacturers interested in certifying their products?
AERC is a voluntary rating, labeling, and certification program. Manufacturers may elect to certify their products with AERC because they recognize that providing consumers with consistent and verifiable energy performance information is important for consumers to be able to make more-informed decisions when purchasing window attachments.
When will attachment ratings be available?
The rating program will be rolled out in three phases.
Product Phase 1: cellular shades, slat shades, roller shades, and storm windows. Rollout is expected in early 2018.
Product Phase 2: solar screens, awnings, roller shutters, and window quilts. Rollout is expected in summer 2019.
Product Phase 3: drapes, louvered shutters, and roman shades. Rollout is expected in summer 2020.
If needed: surface applied films, pleated shades, and sheer shades
